I became a free member of Matchmaker.com simply
to be able to see what kind of response I might see
and whether I might actually find someone who would
appeal to me. I had been a paid member of Chemistry.com and being displeased with it, dropped my subscription.
With the free browsing offer with Matchmaker.com,
I figured there was nothing to lose--if I either
saw a profile for a lady who seemed a true "match" for
me, or better yet, received a wink or letter from
a lady after she read my profile (within the limits
it set, I tried to be as detailed and honest as possible
about my own virtues and flaws and what I hoped to
find in a lady), I could then subscribe and contact
the lady.
From day one, I received messages from
Matchmaker stating
my profile was being used inappropriately and would
be removed. My work is heavily oriented toward the
paralegal, so I have a strong appreciation of what
is legal as well as what is border-line and my response
was to request clarification of what it considered
to be "inappropriate use" as
I was certain I had not violated its protocols. The
response I got was a repeat of the same warning and
an echo of my request for clarification. Since I
was also having problems inputting the text for the
various "essays" I was requested to post,
I figured the problem was a glitch at Matchmaker.com,
though I continued to ask for a clarification of
where the "inappropriate use" had occurred.
That
the problem was indeed a software glitch seemed to
be confirmed when, after I was able to complete my
profile to my satisfaction, the messages warning
that my profile was being "used inappropriately" and
would be deleted stopped.
I
did not receive any such messages for nearly a month,
then on receiving yet another, as I had done previously,
I went to my account to confirm if it was still active
and was instead taken to a "404" page stating that it had
been deleted. Both the message I had received by
e-mail and the "404" page contained a link
by which I could presumably correct this problem.
Proceeding
to use the contact form, I was asked to stipulate
the reason for my contact and the only option I felt
was reasonably close was "my profile",
which I chose. I again stated that I was NOT using
the site inappropriately and requested a response
that stated explicitly what Matchmaker.com regarded
as inappropriate use, but this time I also stated
that if the response I received was again nothing
more than a statement that I was using the site inappropriately,
I would be contacting sites with reviews of Matchmaker.com
to advise any would-be members of the lack of customer
service. By the fact that you are reading this, you
already know the response I received.
I will again
admit that I was not a paid member and might not
have had the problems I did had I been a paid member.
However, given my experiences with other dating services,
I was not about to subscribe just to test how good
the customer service might be and nothing about my
experiences with Matchmaker.com gives me any reason
to think its customer service for paid subscribers
would indeed be better.
