In the war between online dating
services for consumers, publicity is the key to success.
That's why everywhere you turn you see (or hear) commercials
for eHarmony.com and Match.com. Interestingly enough, these
two giants both missed a prime opportunity when PerfectMatch.com landed a prominent appearance in this year's summer romantic
comedy Must Love Dogs (see this issue's News section).
Knowing that this is a once in the lifetime opportunity,
PerfectMatch.com is spending millions to capitalize on
its placement deal with Warner Bros. In one single summer,
PerfectMatch.com could go from "wannabe contender" to
a "major contender" in online dating, and all
of it from a well orchestrated placement and several
events to capitalize on that placement.
For example, PerfectMatch.com is organizing a series
of Mutt Mingle events where singles are invited to
bring their dogs to singles meet-and-greet get togethers.
The company is also spending a lot of ad dollars to
keep the association with the movie strong. If you
go to Google and search "Must Love Dogs" you'll
note that PerfectMatch.com has an ad under sponsored
results letting the world know they are the same service
featured in the movie. An array of moves like this
has set the company up to perfectly capitalize on capturing
millions of new faces.
And it hasn't hurt that PerfectMatch.com is mentioned
and shown several times in the Must Love Dogs movie
trailer.
In reading past editorials you'll see that online
dating service True has
taken a controversial approach to publicity, but will
lose ground (as many other services
will) to a masterfully marketed campaign by little-soon-to-be-big
kid on the block, PerfectMatch.com.
It just goes to show that thinking outside of the box
(in a positive
way) when it comes to marketing is the way to break
through the barrier held by a few giants.
Kudos to PerfectMatch.com on a well orchestrated campaign,

Creative Date Ideas:
Christmas in July
Begin this creative date by inviting your partner over
for "Christmas dinner." Since it is the middle
of summer, your partner is sure to be curious as to what
you mean, but make sure you keep an aura of mystery around
the date. Getting ready for the date requires a bit of
preparation. First, you must take your artificial Christmas
tree out of storage along with the decorations and set
it up. Next, you must wrap a few gifts in some left over
Christmas wrapping paper and place them under the tree.
The more holiday decorations you have around the house,
the better. You are trying to make the night as seasonal
as possible.
Have the tree set up, Christmas music playing, and
Christmas dinner in the oven when your date arrives.
While the Christmas feast is being prepared, serve
hot chocolate (make sure you have your air conditioner
blasting) or eggnog. Since stores usually only carry
eggnog during the winter months, you may need to find
a recipe for eggnog and make it yourself. After dinner,
bring your date over to the Christmas tree and have
him or her open the gifts you have placed under the
tree. Follow the gift opening with some cuddle time
while watching your favorite holiday flick.
This creative date idea is what you make of it. The
more you decorate and give an authentic feeling of
Christmas and the winter season, the more you will
impress your date. Bring your date a bit of cool holiday
spirit during the hot summer months with this date
idea and you and your partner are destined to have
a merry time. (SOURCE: Online Dating Newsletter - www.onlinedatingnewsletter.com)

Online Dating Tips:
Elimate the Negative on First Dates
Sometimes nervousness on a first date can cause a person to cancel out a positive
gesture or turn his/her date off by being negative. For example, in the first
episode of ABC's Hooking Up documentary, one guy gave a girl some flowers,
saying something to the effect of "these are for you, but they'll probably
be dead soon." Adding the "will probably be dead soon" was the
equivalent of canceling the great gesture he had just made. Another guy on
a first date was asked what he thought of online dating (he met his current
date from online dating) and he responded that online dating sucked and went
into a tirade as to why. Saying negative things on your date is a quick and
easy way to turn it into a negative experience for your date. Instead of the
guy saying "online dating sucks" he could have said, "well it
gave me the opportunity to meet you, therefore it's a good thing." (SOURCE:

Relationship Tips:
Waiting Longer to Get Married
In his book, "Mars and Venus on a Date," Dr. John Gray, Ph.D. offers
some insight into why it may be a good idea to wait a while before getting
married:
"Recent marriage statistics reveal that both
men and women are waiting longer to get married. Some
people worry that this is a problem, when really it
is a sign of greater wisdom in young couples. They
are waiting to get married. They are wanting to first
get a sense of who they are, what they can do, what
they want to do, and where they are going before deciding
to make a marriage commitment. It is wise to first
know yourself before trying to share yourself in a
marriage." (SOURCE: Mars
and Venus on a Date,

Romantic Ideas:
Give a Photo Cake
Add a personal touch next time you want to treat your loved one to a special
dessert by giving them a photo cake. Whether it is for your partner's birthday,
to celebrate a special occasion, or just a surprise gift, a cake is almost
always accepted with happiness and gratitude. Personalize the cake by getting
a photo scanned and designed into the icing! Call around to your local bakeries
to see if they have the ability to make a photo design in the cake icing. If
not, there are several places you can order edible icing for your photo cake
online such as Icing Images.
If the photo cake idea seems like something you may
want to do on multiple occasions, there are actual
printers for sale that scan your photo and print it
out in edible ink on a sheet of icing. To get an icing
printer online visit a site like KopyKake or
ComputerCakes to
compare pricing and printer options. However your means
for getting the photo cake, it will undoubtedly be a
fun and tasty treat for your significant other. After
all, a picture is worth a thousand bites. (SOURCE: Online

News: PerfectMatch
Gets Perfect Publicity
(July 27, 2005 - onlinedatingnewsletter.com) This summer's
most publicized romantic comedy, "Must Love Dogs",
opens this Friday and one online dating service is already
receiving enormous publicity from the movie.
"Must Love Dogs" is the story of a woman
that uses an online dating service, PerfectMatch.com (a real service) to find her next true love. The movie
is getting mostly negative and mixed reviews, but as
this summer's biggest romantic comedy, it is expected
to open big. And on the receiving end of any big opening
will be PerfectMatch.com, which not only is mentioned
and shown throughout the movie, but was also prominently
featured in the movie's trailer.
Claire Cook, author of the book Must Love Dogs, said
she was proud and excited with the film. She acknowledged
that the PerfectMatch.com inclusion is different from
her original work and warned fans of the novel to brace
themselves for some key plot changes. "They opened
it up by adding the online relationship element with
PerfectMatch.com, which I think works beautifully," Cook
noted. "It's much more visual."
The CEO of PerfectMatch.com is pleased that they were
able to work out a deal to be featured in the movie.
"We've identified opportunities in entertainment
that allow us to build the brand and extend our reach," said
Duane Dahl, PerfectMatch.com's
President and CEO. "Rare
opportunities like this allow us to stand above the
clutter. The Warner Bros. team has been exceptional
to work with from day one, and it's a terrific, fun
movie."
PerfectMatch.com supplied its technical services to
the film's production, and coordinated co-promotions
with the studio and other marketers. PerfectMatch is
co-marketing the film through its own media buys, partners
and events.
"Must Love Dogs" is rated PG-13 and is 90
minutes in length.

Feature Link: Why
He Dumped You
Online Dating Magazine is pleased to welcome Jennifer
Brown Banks to the team. Starting the first week of August,
Banks will be writing a new weekly column (look for the
announcement in the next newsletter) for Online Dating
Magazine. Banks has written an article titled "Why
He Dumped You" that takes a look at why men dump
women and what women can do to get back on track. Here's
a short excerpt from the article:
"There's probably not a woman living who hasn't
been left by some louse she once loved. And usually,
without explanation or proper closure. Void of needed
answers, she questions herself.
"Was I pretty enough?"
"Thin enough?"
"Good enough?"
Crushed from the experience, she typically becomes
bitter, guarded, less confident, and less trusting
in her next dating encounter. This, ironically, makes
the search for Mr. Right even longer and laced with
disappointment..."
