Match.com to Screen for Sex Offenders

(Online Dating Magazine - April 17, 2011) Just a few days after a California woman filed a lawsuit against Match.com for not screening for sex offenders, Match.com has announced it will now do just that.

On Friday, April 15, it was announced that an unidentified California woman filed a lawsuit against Match.com because of an attack that happened against her by a man who was a sex offender. The woman claimed that Match.com didn't do enough to protect her by failing to screen for sex offenders.

Match.com claimed that wasn't possible, but reversed it's decision earlier today, announcing that it would now screen for sex offenders.

In an Online Dating Magazine survey, conducted over the last nine months, 68% of online daters said that online dating service should be required by law to do background checks on members. 32% said online dating services should not be required by law to do background checks on members. The poll did not ask if they would feel the same if the fee associated with doing background checks was passed onto paid members.

In the case of the California woman, she was violently sexually assaulted on her second date with a man who had a violent history of sexual offenses. The woman contends that had Match.com done background checks then it would have prevented the man from being a member and thus the sexual assault would have never happened against her.
