eHarmony Granted Matching Compatibility Patent(onlinedatingmagazine.com -
May 17, 2004) eHarmony.com ,
an online dating relationship service, today announced
that it has been
granted U.S. Patent No. 6,735,568 for its unique Compatibility
Matching System, a method that uses data from the
study of thousands of married couples to predict long-term
compatibility between two people.
"This patent is the culmination of decades of
research into the factors that make relationships succeed
or
fail," said Greg Forgatch, founding CEO of eHarmony.com . "No
other online dating or relationship site approaches
the matching process at this level with such a strong
emphasis on research and development."
eHarmony's patented
matching approach applies data from extensive clinical
research to predict which people
are most likely to be compatible for long-term relationship
satisfaction.
"We haven't set out to define relationship
chemistry; obviously no system in the world has yet
to accomplish that," explained Neil Clark Warren,
Ph.D., founder and chairman of eHarmony.com . "What
is truly compelling about our methodology is its ability
to put singles together with several carefully evaluated
matches with whom they are highly compatible."
Proving the Compatibility of Science and Love
eHarmony's unique
method of studying married couples and applying the
statistical models developed from
that research to singles looking for a compatible partner
has been validated in follow-up studies in 2002 and
2003.
"We are thrilled with the granting of this
patent, but even more rewarding to us is that research
proves that couples who meet and marry on eHarmony
are significantly happier and more satisfied in their
relationships," noted Steven Carter, Ph.D., eHarmony's director
of research.
Extensive scientific research comparing couples who
met and married via eHarmony.com to married couples who
met by other means reveals that eHarmony's patented
matching technology may be the first to pin love down
to a science. A recent study of 1,347 married couples
found that those introduced through the eHarmony service
were nearly twice as likely to report their marriages
as "extremely happy" or better. Over 90%
of eHarmony.com couples had above-average marriage quality
scores, when compared to couples who had begun their
relationships elsewhere. The results were based on
the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), generally considered
to be one of the most accurate and reliable measures
of marital satisfaction available.
