Self Help Books
What I'm Reading (and you should read too)

Literature changes lives.

Even before I became a professional writer, I knew this. My mom was always big on books and education. Growing up, our house was forever filled with college textbooks, medical journals, encyclopedias, autobiographies, paperbacks and novels.

I was always reading something.

I think that today’s generation is really missing the magic of books!  Blame it on online activities, electronic video games, or the cable culture…but few find this past time to be a worthwhile pursuit.  How sad.

Books are powerful.  They heal.  They help us to understand ourselves and the world in which we live a little better.

Need convincing?

Look at the millions of dollars in revenue generated from self-help books each year.  Books also allow us to escape and travel to different places without ever leaving the confines of the corners of our bedrooms.

And because of this, it’s not unusual to find my nose between the pages of 3-4 “good reads” in any given week, as time permits.

Here are a few "GEMS" I've discovered recently that you'll enjoy:

The Right Words at the Right Time
By Marlo Thomas
Over 100 pop stars, athletes, authors and successful icons help to enhance your life and inspire you to greater heights, through quotes, anecdotes, and sage advice!  Some of my favorites are: Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donell, Chris Rock, and Ray Romano.  This book is engaging, entertaining, and easy to read.  Proceeds go to St. Jude’s Research Hospital.  Get it and share the love!

When Bad Things Happen to Good People
By Harold S. Kushner

Who among us has not had some tragedy occur that left us with grief and unanswered questions? This best seller takes those plaguing doubts, guilt feelings, and challenging issues, and strives to make sense of it through the eyes of a wise Rabbi, who has also dealt with this in his own life through the illness of a child.

Advance Your Swagger
By Fonzworth Bentley

I’m sure that I’m not the only one that’s sometimes challenged by social etiquette and proper protocol at posh affairs.  This book, written by former personal assistant to Puff Daddy, A.K.A. Sean Combs, is impressive without being ostentatious.  It’s fun to read, and even offers a quiz to reinforce some of the tips presented in the book.  Beautiful photos also add to the appeal of this “bible” on good behavior.

Entertaining with Regis and Kathie Lee (not available at
By Regis and Kathie Lee

Written by the popular daytime television hosts, this manual on entertaining is bound to make you popular with your party guests!  Organized by season, it ‘s filled with great recipes, concepts for invitations, decorating ideas, party tips, gift suggestions, family photos, and more. When you read it, you’ll feel like you’re sitting in their living rooms. Check out the mouthwatering recipes like: Kathie Lee’s Seafood Salad, Phyllis Diller’s Himalayan Aphrodisiac, and Joanna Philbin’s Exam-cramming Brownies.

The Martha Rules
By Martha Stewart
Many of you may know that I’m a big Martha Stewart fan, if you’ve followed some of my previous columns.  If not, there’s no time like the present to read up!  Anyway…she is the epitome of elegance and excellence, in my opinion. So I couldn’t wait to throw back the covers of this book and get insider’s tips on growing and managing a successful business.  And as usual, this diva delivers!  She shares 10 crucial tips for today’s entrepreneur that you’d be wise to heed.  They include lessons on: the relevance and role of passion, identifying the big idea, building an A-team, and sound moneymaking strategies.

12 Steps to Eliminate Debt Forever
by Sharman G. Lawson
Think financial wizard Suze Orman, but with true street savvy!  Lawson provides practical, foolproof ways to prosper for the pay check to paycheck people.  What I like about this book is that it is well thought out and thorough. With just over 100 pages, it covers a lot of topics concisely.  The author even integrates spiritual concepts and karma into the equation.  Must read chapters include: The power of a vision and a purpose, Changing your money habits, and the Philosophy of debt free living. There are also goal-guiding questions placed throughout the book that provide food for thought.

Why not pick up one of these “must-reads”, or order through AMAZON.COM, find a nice park bench and enjoy the beauty of spring!
