Singles Vacations
Editor's Note: In addition to the singles vacations listed in this column, you can also visit Online Dating Magazines Singles Travel Vacation page.
Being single is no excuse to skip your vacation this summer. If your travel budget is healthy and you want to keep your resolution to see more of the world, do it! There’s no reason why you can’t flaunt your independence and still schedule your vacation with your best travel buddy—you.
Just in case you lose your nerve and decide maybe you aren’t quite ready to fly solo to a strange place, there are a number of services available for the single traveler. Some sites target singles specifically looking for love; others focus more on those who simply don’t want to travel alone. Whether you’re looking to chill out on a sandy beach with a fruity drink, or if high adventure is more your style, there are singles’ travel services out there for everyone:
Singles Travel International
STI advertises a range of travel packages, among them Singles Cruises, Singles Weekends, Singles Adventures, and Singles Tours. Just about any vacation you could think of is available through STI’s service. There are fewer options for the weekend trips than the longer tours, but sometimes that short change of scenery is all you need! STI is focused on the solo traveler who doesn’t want to travel solo—in other words, an unattached guy or gal who wants the adventure but doesn’t have a travel buddy. You must register to become a member of the STI network, after which you can plan your trip itinerary or browse the membership for possible trip roommates. It’s sort of like meeting your college roommate for the first time, but no doubt the food will be much better.
Trek America
If you love high adventure and extreme sports, these getaways are for you. For those who’d like more of the bright lights and faster pace of the big city, the service also offers a Freedom Trail weeklong excursion to Boston, Washington DC, and Niagara Falls. Trek America also runs trips to Canada. Travelers can choose from the road trip of Canada’s frontier, hiking in the Rockies, camping in five national parks, or exploring the deep wilderness of the Klondike region. Smaller tours and activities are included with each destination package. Excursions to Alaska’s wilderness, including treks through the Kenai Peninsula and Denali National Park, and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico are also available.
Cruisingforlove.com
There’s something very romantic about the ocean (it wasn’t called The Love Boat for nothing now, was it?) This service hosts cruises for singles that are serious about finding love. Besides the beautiful ports of call—which includes Cozumel, Mexico; the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Mexican Riviera—the trip includes plenty of opportunities for singles to get to know each other. Their website advertises cocktail parties, Vegas-style shows, comedy nights, and plenty of other activities.
Italian Cookery Course
Single or not, this site offers what sounds like the trip of a lifetime. A week in a Tuscan villa, meeting fabulous singles from all over the world, learning how to cook delicious Italian dishes, and soaking up the sun? Sign me up! Just browsing their website made me want to book a flight. In between cooking classes, guests can swim in the villa’s pool, sightsee, or just relax. Sigh.
Triangle C Ranch
Right out of the movie City Slickers, this vacation will help you get in touch with your inner cowboy or cowgirl. Though this kind of looks like fun, you may want to pass if the hot, dusty, rugged trails of the West aren’t really your thing. The Triangle C Ranch is a family-owned dude ranch in Dubois, Wyoming that offers a Country Singles Week in the spring and summer. The package includes sightseeing in nearby Jackson Hole, country line dancing, whitewater rafting on the famous Snake River, and horseback riding.
Travel Indochina
If exotic locales are more your thing, you’ve found the right place. Travel Indochina runs small (no more than 15 people) group vacations to the Far East--Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, India, China & Tibet, and Japan. Though the bulk of the time is spent sightseeing and learning about the history and culture of each place, there are also opportunities to help others. According to the website, each tour itinerary includes some time at childrens’ shelters in Saigon and Cambodia. All travelers will become more educated about the issues facing the people in this part of the world and the organizations devoted to tackling those issues. The company has philosophy of giving back to the countries their travelers visit. These tours promise to be an eye-opening and humbling journey.
As always, familiarize yourself with where you’ll be heading. Take necessary safety precautions (our elementary school teachers who reminded us to “Stay with the group!” were on to something), and have a fabulous time!
