JENNIFER'S GEMS

The Funny Thing About Respect

"R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me." ~ Aretha Franklin

The other day, while talking to a friend of mine, I expressed that I had written an article on a controversial rap singer. My friend was really surprised, given that I was venturing new territory.

He also took issue with the fact that rap singers often degrade women through lewd lyrics and offensive videos, and wondered if my actions helped give exposure to someone unworthy.

Truth is, as a creative artist, I uphold the right to freedom of speech (specifically with adult audiences.). Not to mention, musically speaking, I listen to and enjoy just about everything, depending upon my mood and mindset.

And though some musical artists are indeed offensive in the way they choose to depict us, I think we as women do just as much to contribute to the problem of disrespect, if not more.

In honor of March, which is National Women’s History Month, I’d like to address some of these issues.

The funny thing about respect is that it has to come from us first. It’s like charity: it begins at “home;' which is not to suggest that all women are lacking in this regard, but even a few unfortunately adds to the problem, not the solution.

Here are some examples:

» USAGE OF THE “B” WORD AND PROFANITY INSANITY
Truth is, this word is very commonly used within female circles, jokingly and otherwise. I’ve even heard it used frequently on daytime TV. If it’s offensive when a man uses it, shouldn’t it be taboo to use with one another too?

» GOSSIP
Trashing other women through rumors and insults is another way in which we fail to honor sisterhood, and show a lack of integrity as women. And men hear it!

» BUYING GUYS’ AFFECTIONS
This is one thing I’ve never honestly understood, but would like to offer this piece of advice. Ladies, you should never give your money to a man unless he has a gun pointed in your direction! Exceptions to this rule would of course apply to a husband, business partner, or your son. Buying a man’s affections erodes the respect factor for the rest of us, and ensures that you’ll ultimately be broke and bitter.

» SLEEPING AROUND
Sure, it’s a day and age of sexual liberation, but double standards still prevail! When too many ladies are too sexually “liberal”, it gives us a collective “reputation.” It also makes it difficult to hold men to any type of chivalrous standards.

» BACKSTABBING
Your girlfriend’s man should never be considered “fair game” even if he is fine, or makes the first move!

» SHOWING YOUR “ASS-ETS”
These days, a man doesn’t have to go very far for a “peep show.” Seems that female fashions are becoming more and more revealing. And there is less discretion. It’s okay to wear sexy apparel to attract a man. In fact you should! But save a little intrigue and mystery for the bedroom. Know the difference between trashy and sassy. Give him something to look forward to!

» CALLING HIS HOUSE THAT HE SHARES WITH ANOTHER WOMAN
Can you say “suicide”?

» LETTING A MAN BUY YOU
Love should never come with a price tag. Neither should you.

» JEALOUSY
Given the dynamic role that we play in society, and our many demands, we really ought to be more supportive of one another. Instead of “hating” we should be celebrating!

When she is worthy, why not give another sister a compliment on a job well done, an accomplishment, a cute outfit, or other commendable things? It won’t hurt and it won’t cost you nothing.

In closing, I'd like to offer the following poem:

MEMO TO FRAYED FEMALES
KICK BACK,
RELAX,
LIGHT
SCENTED CANDLES
REMEMBER
THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN’T HANDLE
FORGET YOUR CARES OF THE DAY
(KNOW THAT IT’S OKAY)
HAVE A SIP OF WINE
UNCLUTTER YOUR WORRIED MIND
ENJOY A LITTLE FUDGE
INDULGE IN THINGS THAT YOU LOVE
FOR ALL THAT YOU DO,
TAKE SPECIAL CARE
TO TAKE CARE OF
SPECIAL YOU!

For stories and celebrations of sisterhood, I recommend the following titles:

Chocolate for a Woman's Heart
by Kay Allenbaugh

Life's Spices from Seasoned Sistahs
by Vicki Ward
