Dating Triumphs and Tragedies

Guys
are Weird
My
friend was recently complaining about her man-of-the-minute,
and to reassure her it was ok, which it was, I told
her simply, “guys are weird.” It’s
true enough, but then I realized, I was on to something.
Guys
are weird. That’s why they need women—to
normalize them. Or…at least make them more
crazy so that they think they’re sane. Then
they feel better about themselves because they think
it’s the woman who is weird. It’s a trick,
but balanced. A weird cycle, but it evens out. Men
need women. But women need men. Otherwise, who would
we drive insane?
Maybe
guys’ weirdness is a good thing, because
they just don’t care. They don’t think about
things, they just do it, not caring what other people
think about them. Whereas women might be a little more
self-conscious.
I
was leaving the gym the other day and some guy came
up to me and asked if I knew of any apartments nearby
because he wanted something close to the gym so he
could just roll out of bed and head on over. I thought
that was weird because he had a tie on, was standing
outside of the gym with a little suitcase, and most
people aren’t just randomly looking for apartments. But
maybe it wasn’t weird, maybe he had a real reason.
As in…he needed somewhere to live.
But
when dating, there are a variety of “weird” things that
guys might do, that perhaps aren’t so weird after
all.
For
instance:
Affectionate
little names
When
he calls you “pumpkin,” he doesn’t
mean you look like one. Take it as a compliment. He
thinks enough of you to call you something sweet. And
he doesn’t
feel like too much of a sissy to say it. It takes a
lot for a guy to do something like that, so welcome
the comment, even if you’d rather be called gourd.
Which
way?
We’ve all encountered “that
guy” (read:
every guy) who doesn’t like to “stop and
ask for directions. He can find it himself. And can
you blame him? Of course he wants to be in control,
lead the way, and prove to you that he knows what he’s
doing. He has you in his care, and as the protector,
should be able to get you from point A to point B safely.
If he stops to ask for directions, he may see it as
a sign of weakness, whereas you see it as getting to
the party faster. So if he’s a little reluctant
to stop at the first gas station, maybe let it slide,
and stop at the next one. It’ll be a little easier
on his ego.
Love
me, love my dog
What
is it with a guy and his dog? Sure, he’s cute,
but does it have to take 10 extra minutes to get out
the door because he has to canoodle with his pooch?
Yeah, they may be a guy’s best friend, but if
you’re
his girlfriend, or at least dating, you want to be
the focus of his attention. But still, you have to
respect his devotion to something, and it is kind of
cute to see his softer side and how lovable he is.
And if he can take such good care of a pet, you can
be sure he’ll
take even better care of you. ·
Are
you ready for some football?
Personally, I’m
a sports fan, but I know that a lot of ladies are
mystified by a guy’s addition to sports. And
it’s never
ending, because when baseball season’s over,
it’s
football, and basketball, and back to baseball, and
then there are the hockey fans, and soccer, and golf
and tennis and the list goes on. And guys will sit
there and watch all of it. And many times, their
lady must sit there patiently with them, or impatiently,
and at least pretend. But he’s passionate about
something. Think about what you like, and if someone
nagged you about your interests. Like, if while you
were reading Cosmo, he just stared at you, asked
you why you were reading it and told you to put it
down. Not that many guys would deny their girl of
Cosmo, but you get the picture…
Basically,
any weirdness you think a guy has, can basically be
seen in a positive light, or at least as a cute quirk.
They’re
all just part of his personality, and if you really think
about it, usually some sort of gesture to impress you,
or some sort of manly pre-programming to aid you. It’s
actually very sweet. Just think…it’s all
for you….in a weird way.
