Online dating makes it much easier to date than in the past. However, some people still become “desperate” when online dating doesn’t start working the way they want it to. Expectations and reality are often two separate things. For example, many people expect virtually everyone they email on a dating service to respond back. But in reality, only about 1 in every 20 do. Not realizing this, some online daters will simply copy and paste a generic message, then email it to everyone they can. This type of desperation is extremely ineffective.

In reality, online dating is like farming in that you need to cultivate it for success. How?

1) Check the date the person was last on the online dating service (most services show this). If it is more than three weeks then don’t waste your time in sending a message.

2) When you send a message to someone, don’t make it generic. Look through the person’s profile and ask a few questions based on things they said in their profile.

3) Remember, this isn’t a job interview. Keep the focus on the other person, not yourself. Work on improving the quality of your messages and making them personal.

Following the above will make you more successful and less desperate when it comes to online dating.
