Online Dating Service Glimpse.com Shuts Down
(onlinedatingmagazine.com -
March 29, 2006) Spark Networks has shut down its online
dating service, Glimpse.com, which targeted gays and
lesbians. The closure took place earlier this month
and the Website now redirects users to American
Singles.
Online Dating Magazine inquired about
the closure and outstanding subscriptions and was told
the following by a representative of Spark Networks:
"Outstanding subscriptions were refunded.
If a former Glimpse member logs into American
Singles,
their profile information is automatically transferred."
No comment was provided as to why
the closure took place.
"Things just shut down two weeks ago
and logins were automatically redirected to American
Singles,
which not only costs more to join but provides none
of the free services Glimpse.com did," says an Online
Dating Magazine reader, who emailed the publication
inquiring about the closure. "What a way to lose customers!"
Glimpse.com claimed to have 500,000 gay
and lesbian members, saying that "Glimpse.com members
come from big cities and small towns in the U.S. and
abroad, and everyone's looking to meet someone new."
"It's never a good thing when an online
dating service that has hundreds of thousands of members
closes its doors," says Joe Tracy, Publisher of Online
Dating Magazine. "This move came about the same time
that ChristianMingle was changed to Relationships.com,
so obviously Spark Networks is making several moves
to reposition itself within the industry. I doubt that
Glimpse.com will redirect to American
Singles forever,
so I'm sure there's a plan in place for that domain
name."
