JENNIFER'S GEMS

My Celebrity Crush on John Cusack

BIO: John Cusack is an American actor and screen writer born June 28, 1966 in Evanston, Illinois. He is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his many varied roles over the last few decades. He's the brother of Joan Cusack.

Here's a brain teaser: At what age does one outgrow romantic crushes?

Would you say in the teens? Twenties? Thirties? Forties Fifties? Or never?

I pose this question because I'm truly perplexed at my newly developed later-in-life crush on the cute, charismatic, magical persona of actor John Cusack.

Let's get this straight. I'm not typically prone to celebrity types, am not a groupie, and have no history of stalking.

Yet this man fascinates me. Truly!

I'm even thinking of joining his fan club! Heck, I might even become the president.

Okay, so I admit that several columns ago, I had a crush on rapper 50 Cents, but that was, well...different, and purely based upon his animal magnetism. And there was a brief stage when  just the mention of Keanu Reeves would make me blush.

But that was yesterday.  I think...

Anyway, it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind. Right?

So here's how it happened. Gradually, innocently, one movie at a time.  The object of my crush started out by being attractive. Then I found him to be a good actor. Then he seemed to possess a magical quality. Then I started to research him on the Internet and found out that he's also an intelligent writer and columnist. He's never been married. He's socially conscious.

And,I also read that he voted for Obama for president. And then the deal was sealed!

Without further adieu... here's a few of my favorites among his long list of must-see movies.

SERENDIPITY---John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale make magic as two strangers who meet by accident while in the throes of shopping for Xmas gifts for their then partners. (This is the first movie where Cusack got my attention). Before this I didn't really know he existed. Anyway, I digress... When these two shoppers haggle over a pair of gloves, the connection is immediate and their interaction is engaging. Cusack wants to move forward, but Kate opts to let fate seal their romantic deal.  Five years later, after a sequence of events and people they reconnect. And the rest is movie history. This flick is funny, romantic, and well developed. It's a must see for those singles who are searching for Mr. or Mrs. Right and find encouragement in happily-ever-after-endings.

MUST LOVE DOGS---I've seen this movie so many times, I'm embarrassed to reveal exactly how many. This movie solidified my crush on Cusack! In it, he plays a guy who is recovering from a love gone wrong who is fixed up through a friend to try Internet Dating. He meets a  divorced woman with whom he is initially smitten, but does not make the best first impression.

They date then they break. They even get involved with other people. Ultimately their paths cross again when they are both more emotionally equipped and have a better appreciation for each other and are able to make a better go of things. It's one of the best in boy meets girl movies! Don't miss it.

MARTIAN CHILD---I was taken quite by surprise with this selection. I almost put it back when searching among the available titles of movies for the day to choose from. But, since it starred Cusack, my curiosity got the best of me, and I took it home. Story line? A widowed fiction writer adopts a hard-to-place troubled little boy who is convinced that he's from another planet. I found the movie to be warm, funny, moving, and full of touching moments.

And besides, what could be sexier than a man who portrays a caring, conscientious single father? You'll enjoy it too.

So, there you have it folks, the history and the how-it-happened account of my current crush on John Cusack. And who knows, maybe “serendipity” will cause him to Google his name, read this column and contact me. You just never know. ;-)

There's nothing wrong with a girl doing a little wishful thinkin'!
