39 year old female from Arizona

I am a divorced, 39-year old woman with a young child, living in Phoenix, AZ. In May 2004, I tried Matchmaker to find romance. I had what seemed like some genuine communication, and some that was just downright rude. I only met one man face-to-face from that site. He didn't look at all like his pictures and he didn't tell me about his criminal background, which I later found on the Internet. Then, I tried Match.com. I was truly overwhelmed by the number of responses. The first date was okay, but the man was not for me (he was also 5 years older than his profile said). The second date was a hit! We clicked instantly, fell hard and fast, and decided we were a "match"! We dated for about 9 months, then he broke up with me by email because he said he wasn't ready for a long-term commitment. About 5 months later, he begged me to take him back and swore he was ready for a long-term commitment. Yes, I know I was an idiot for giving him a second chance. After another 5 months together, he must've gotten commitmentphobic again. So, this time he didn't break up with me by email or phone call... he just put his profile back up on Match.com after we had an argument.

Believe it or not, I actually consider my experience with online dating a success, even though that relationship ended unpleasantly. In fact, I've dated several very nice men that I met on Match.com who all seemed relatively normal. Some of the guys I've met have even become friends that I hope to keep. Of course, I'm also getting better at weeding out the duds -- I do a lot of research online in public records before meeting someone and I don't believe everything someone tells me (such as, "I'm new to online dating".) I remain cautious, but optimistic.
