Sex with Your Ex Review:
Dr. Yvonne Fulbright – a well respected sexuality
expert – never fails to make me smile with her
books and academic writings. Therefore, you can imagine
my excitement to receive recently a new book of hers
to review. I have said many times that I am no fan
of “self-help” books, but I have come to
expect content of high standard from Yvonne. As a result,
I read this book with an open mind (which isn’t
difficult to do when the word “sex” is
in the title!) Two hundred and eleven pages later,
I found myself thoroughly entertained and even educated.
Sex with Your Ex… is a smooth, intelligent but
highly readable journey into the “do’s” and “don’ts” of
intimate relationship patterns that’s sure to
help many people who feel stuck in their old habits
or who are trying to learn the nuances of nurturing
a romantic relationship.
What
a reader gets for their money (USD $12.95) is a bargain:
a wealth of pragmatic guidance of sound clinical
judgment when it comes to addressing sensitive issues
like self-esteem, sexuality and serious or fatal
relationship mistakes. Sprinkled throughout the 70
topics are short, real life stories to help illustrate
the dilemmas broached in the book, as well as the
points that Yvonne makes to address those issues
and conflicts. As a fellow academic, I could tell
where her advice and arguments drew from scientific
studies and her own clinical acumen, but the reader
doesn’t see any citations or references.
That’s a shame and a drawback in my opinion,
but I can sympathize with her logic – lay audiences
simply want the material, not the supporting documentation.
Of course, most self-help books seem not to have used
any credible supporting material. This is why I really
would’ve liked to have seen a real bibliography;
its inclusion would’ve differentiated this book
from other works with questionable authority.
Careful
and insightful readers will see that a running theme
throughout the book is the traditional Eastern philosophical
notion that opportunities and positive outcomes can
be found in almost any crisis or conflict. Yvonne masterfully
educates readers on how to turn undesirable situations
around to create growth opportunities for a couple.
Therefore, this book certainly takes a piercing look
at a number of fun, embarrassing and sobering situations
related to intimate relationships, but the value of
Yvonne’s book goes well beyond those specific
scenarios. She imparts on her readers a healthy mindset
for building up a couple rather than encouraging couples
to see their differences and disagreements as inherently
adversarial situations.
The
production quality of the book is superb. It’s an attractive and well designed
book, and the size is atypically compact. This is a
book that you can easily take with you virtually anywhere.
And you may just want to. I’ve read and reread
Sex with Your Ex… many times now just to see
what new information, insights and subtleties I could
discover. So far, I’ve not been disappointed.
I guess that just goes to show that big things can
come in small packages. Highly recommended!
