How are STDs Cured?
I'd like to know how STDs
get cured. Thanks. ~
Curious
Dear Curious,
Most STDs can be effectively treated and some can be "cured". However, there
currently are no cures for STDs like HIV, HPV,
or herpes. Even so, many symptoms
of even those STDs can at least be treated.
If you allow a treatable STD to go untreated for a
long period of time, it could cause severe damage to
you. Thus, it is vital that you get regular STD checkups,
particularly when you are sexually active.
STDs have different treatment methods. For example,
to cure syphilis, a single intramuscular injection
of penicillin, an antibiotic, is usually effective
if the person has had syphilis for less than a year.
Most STDs are treated with a high dose of antibiotics,
available by prescription only, which is why it is
vital to see a physician when you have a concern about
an STD.

Only a physician can properly diagnose whether or
not you have an STD. Thus it is important that you
get an STD test done if you have a concern. None of the
advice given in this column is a substitute for physician
advice.
If you think you may have a sexually transmitted
disease, you should see a physician immediately to
be properly diagnosed and treated. You should not try
to diagnose or treat symptoms on your own.
