Lubricants and Condoms
Dear STD Advice,
Is it OK to use lubricants with
condoms? ~
The Lubricator
Dear Lubricator,
It's important that you use great care when using a lubricant with condoms.
Here's what the CDC says about the subject:
"Use only water-based lubricants (e.g., K-Y Jelly™,
Astroglide™, AquaLube™, and glycerin) with
latex condoms. Oil-based lubricants (e.g., petroleum
jelly, shortening, mineral oil, massage oils, body
lotions, and cooking oil) can weaken latex."
In addition, the CDC does recommend using a lubricant,
stating, "Ensure adequate lubrication during intercourse."
While the CDC doesn't say why they make this recommendation,
the likely reason is to help prevent tears in the condom.
Many condoms are already properly prelubricated.

Only a physician can properly diagnose whether or
not you have an STD. Thus it is important that you
get an STD test done if you have a concern. None of the
advice given in this column is a substitute for physician
advice.
If you think you may have a sexually transmitted
disease, you should see a physician immediately to
be properly diagnosed and treated. You should not try
to diagnose or treat symptoms on your own.
